Introduction to Streethouse Trip 2024
During the first week of August 2024, a small group of students from the DRAGEN Lab began a month-long research and work assignment that has taken them to Streethouse, located in North Yorkshire. For the duration of this assignment, the team will be participating in various research and experiential learning opportunities to support work being conducted by Dr. Stephen Sherlock, a project collaborator, and his archaeological expeditions at the Streethouse Farm. This was the second year that the DRAGEN Lab has deployed learners to Streehouse to work with Dr. Sherlock.
Activities included in this assignment vary in nature, though all contribute to an exploration of the lives of the Neolithic, Anglo-Saxon, and Roman populations in Northern England and their interactions with their natural environments. This year, Erin, Gillian, Kian, John, and Shannon will participate in a new and exciting archaeological excavation. They will also perform 3D scans of previously discovered artifacts, and develop academic materials for use in classrooms across the Tees Valley region of northern England. These experiential learning tasks allow team members to develop new skill sets, while actively piecing together a framework that can be applied to educational outreach in classrooms.
In the first week of this placement, the team adapted to and explored the local area, and began to create educational materials for the overarching project. On Saturday 10 August, team members are expected to break ground on an archaeological excavation. We all look forward to sharing more about this project in future blog posts, and to track the evolution of this project at each turn!
